Local hospitals traditionally see fewer blood donations during the summer season. The demand, however, remains constant.
To help offset the shortage, Lee Memorial Health System will hold a blood drive at Edison Mall, with food and prizes offered as incentives to bring out the crowds.
The event will be held this Friday, Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Edison Mall, located at 4125 Cleveland Avenue in Fort Myers (in front of Dillard's).
All blood donations made to a Lee Memorial Health System Blood Center remain in our Southwest Florida community. Blood donations go directly to helping patients in our local hospitals, including pediatric and adult cancer patients and trauma victims.
Donors are encouraged to eat a meal and drink plenty of water prior to giving blood. A photo ID is required at time of donation. Donors must be at least 17-years-old and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. Sixteen-year-olds may donate with written parental consent. There is no upper age limit for donating blood. Most health conditions and medication do not prohibit donation. Tattoos are also permitted, provided they are completely healed and were acquired in a licensed tattoo facility.
All donors will receive free vouchers and coupons to shops at the Edison mall, including Yankee Candle, Starbucks and Regis Salon.
Food for the event will be supplied by the Elephant Bar Restaurant.
