Jewish holy days schedule of services

September 17, 2009
Submitted by RABBI MURRAY SALTZMAN

This Friday evening, Sept. 18, will initiate a 10-day period marking Judaism's holiest season of the year known as the Days of Awe. It begins with Rosh Hashanah, the New Year and extends to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

During this observance, Jews gather in synagogues to review the past year's moral and spiritual experiences followed by self examination and introspection to recognize and confess shortcomings and errors.

The Day of Atonement, a fast day, looks for both reconciliation with God and fellow human beings. Atonement requires prayer, the repair of behavior which reflects our frailties.

Finally, it is climaxed with a pledge not to allow those errors to happen again in the coming year.

Locally, services will take place at Temple Bat Yam of the Islands, whose worship services take place in Fellowship Hall of the Congregational Church of Christ, located at 2050 Periwinkle Way on Sanibel. The schedule is as follows:

Rosh Hashanah - Friday, Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 19 at 10:30 a.m.

Yom Kippur - Sunday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 28 at 10:30 a.m.
