Give credit where credit is due

To the editor,

Visitors to and residents of Sanibel were privileged to view a spectacular fireworks display Sunday evening, July 4. Anyone who witnessed that show needs to know the backstory of this event.

Someone dropped the ball in finding funding for the fireworks this year, but Councilmember Jennings called the fumble and Sharon Michie of Cottages To Castles rushed to pick up the ball, moving at amazing speed to score the goal, with an assist by her mother, Judy. The fans went wild, cheering her on and showering her with support as she raced toward the end zone.

Now all we needed was the extra point, but a powerful storm rolled in from the sidelines and threatened to cancel the game altogether. Just in the nick of time, a radiant rainbow appeared to signal the departure of the disruption and fans were treated to what was perhaps the most magnificent display of fireworks in the history of Sanibel.

Okay, enough with the awkward analogies. I hope that anyone who enjoyed this year’s fireworks will take the time to thank Sharon Michie and her mom for winning a victory, against all odds, that benefited our entire community. You may visit Cottages to Castles at 2427 Periwinkle Way, phone 472-6385 or e-mail friendsofjuly4fireworks@gmail.com. And, while you’re at it, you might consider making a donation to next year’s game – err, fireworks that is.
