Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

Former Sanibel resident Charles "Ted" Cole of Port Charlotte passed away on Oct. 10, 2010 at the Douglas Jacobson State Veteran Home in Port Charlotte, Fla. He was 81.

He was born in Brockton, Mass. and at age 3 moved to Daytona Beach. It was there that he developed his love of country and the sea. He graduated from the University of Florida with a liberal arts degree, attended the University of Miami majoring in Business and — just a few months shy of graduating — entered the United States Air Force flight school and received his commission as a Second Lieutenant. During the Korean War, he was a pilot with the 57th Fighter Interceptor Squadron stationed in Keflavih, Iceland.

Ted, his wife, Theresa, and their three children were Sanibel residents from 1966 to 2000. Ted was a respected charter sport fishing captain of the Lucky Lady for 25 years. He served on the board of the Sanibel Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Sanibel Community Church.

After his diagnosis of Alzheimers at age 72, he regretfully retired from the charter fishing business, but not from fishing. For four years after moving to their cabin on Lake Cherokee, S.C., he walked to the dock daily and returned with fish. He also enjoyed fly fishing for trout on the nearby Chattooga River. For the remaining years, until he became a resident at the V.A., he walked down to the nearby pier in Charlotte Harbor several times daily. He kept his angling skill along with his optimism, kindness and cheerful demeanor. He went into a decline only two months ago and received the additional services of Tidewell Hospice.

He is deeply missed by his wife of 46 years, Theresa, his daughters — Shannon Miller and her husband, Jeff, of Punta Gorda, Slade, of Miami, and Shawn of Christ Church, N.Z.; and his granddaughters, Dylan Ann and Delaney Miller.

A private celebration of his life will be held at a later date when, as per his wishes, his family will scatter his remains by the favorite fishing spots in Sanibel and then they will go fishing. A happy memory of Ted may be expressed online to'>
