Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

John (Jack) J. O'Donnell, of Salisbury and Sanibel/Fort Myers, died on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010 at Hope Hospice in Fort. Myers. He was 77.

John was born in Lawrence, to the late Thomas and Catherine O'Donnell, on Jan. 5, 1933. He grew up and attended St. Lawrence Grammar School and Central Catholic High School. Jack joined the United States Air Force in June of 1951 and was honorably discharged in June of 1955 as Airman First Class.

After his military service, Jack became an officer of the Massachusetts State Police. He was proud to perform the duties of a Mass State Trooper for 14 years. After retiring from the State Police, Jack moved to Salisbury and managed three nightclubs: The Beach Club, The Sands and The Five O'Clock.

Jack spent another 15 years in the entertainment business, a job he loved. In 2001, Jack moved his permanent residence to Sanibel, a place he never wanted to leave! After being cremated, his ashes were scattered in the Gulf of Mexico.

Jack is survived by his sister, Mary Bateson, and her husband James of Andover; and their six children, Neil (and wife Cindy) of Methuen; Maureen Barenboim (and husband James) of Andover; Laurie Bateson of Hampton, N.H.; Todd (and wife Patricia) of Andover; Tammy Barry (and husband Steve) of Westport, Conn.; and Shaun Bateson of Andover. Jack is also survived by Teresa O'Donnell (wife of late Thomas O'Donnell, brother) and their two children, Mary Catherine and Chris, all of Maspeth, N.Y. He will be remembered fondly by 10 great-nieces and nephews, as well as great friends.

A memorial Mass will be held on Nov. 7 at the Star of The Sea Church, 18 Beach Road, Salisbury Beach, at noon. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory be made to Hope Hospice, 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908 or to the American Kidney Foundation, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852.
