Beachview men battle the elements, prepare for first Member-Member tourney

January 26, 2011
Submitted by J.W.. BOYNTON

The weather on Jan. 22 confronted Beachview men's golfers with a stiff breeze out of the north, the threat of rain and alternating hot and cold temperatures as the sun and gray storm clouds battled it out in the skies over Sanibel.

Thirty-three men competed in a par 3 (three ball), par 4 (two ball) and par 5 (one ball) format, which puts pressure on all team members to contribute throughout the round.

After noting the conspicuous absence of several top club officers from this important, non-major tournament, Head Professional Scott Hatto reminded all golfers to "play the ball as it lies," and 'hole out all putts — no gimmes," two of golf's most fundamental rules.

First place went to Tom "By The Rules" Ware, Dick "The Professor" Arnould, David "The Auditor" Smith, and Bill "The Happy Farmer" Blandenship. Dave Wisely, Marty Gallagher, Al Krause and Jerry Mader finished second, just two missed putts behind. Third place went to Jim Sauer, Gary Dobbie, Bill Sartoris and Dik Chocol.

Chocol trails Rich Rompala by two points in the season-long President's Cup competition, with 2010 champion, Rene Lohser, nine points behind in third place. The first Beachview Men's Member-Member Tournament will be played this Saturday, Jan. 29.
