Gloria Rosse

February 16, 2011
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

Gloria L. Rosse, 85, formerly of Captiva, passed away on Feb. 10, 2011 at Hope Hospice Cape Coral in the loving arms of her daughter, Margot. She had cancer.

Gloria was born in New York City in 1925 to a Russian mother. She attended Endicott College, where she was on the Dean's List and was queen of the Valentine's Ball. She also attended modeling school in New York and did some professional modeling. She loved getting lots of beautiful clothes all the time, so her first job at Lord & Taylor was completely compatible.

She then moved to Massachusetts and eventually came to Captiva in 1961, where she met Charles. Gloria was married to the late Charles Rosse, a fishing guide for many years on Captiva and Andy Rosse’s son, for 43 years. Gloria worked (and loved it!) at The Bubble Room for a few years where she was a hostess. Everyone loved Gloria!

Gloria had a lot of interesting stories to tell. She was very sad to leave Captiva when she and her husband moved to Pine Island. She loved Captiva, but the islands were not the same as they used to be years ago.

Gloria loved to read and also do watercolor and oil paintings. She loved ice skating when she was younger. She will be in our hearts forever and will be forever missed.

She is survived by her daughter, Margot Freitag, and her sons, Ron and Tony Rosse. She is also survived by six grandchildren — Ryan and Lauren Freitag, Alexis Lipton, Morgan Melucci, Nicholas Rosse and Amanda Jane Rosse; a great granddaughter — Grace Sybil Lipton; and also her precious cat, Lola, and parakeet. She is predeceased by her husband, Charles Rosse, and also her daughter, Sybil Meeder.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20 at Hope Hospice, 2430 Diplomat Parkway East, Cape Coral, FL 33909. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Hope Hospice will be greatly appreciated.
