Become better acquainted with local artists through the BIG ARTS Artists Studio Tour this Friday, April 15. Studio Tour tickets include lunch at The Sanctuary Golf Club, and can be purchased for $50.
Artists Studio Tour begins at BIG ARTS at 10 a.m. where tour participants pick up their tour map and information for the day, and view the art exhibits. The artists on this year’s Studio Tour include Pat Dunn, Jane Hudson, Leoma Lovegrove, Babs Snyderman and others.
BIG ARTS galleries will also be open featuring the Southwest Florida Craft Guild Exhibit in Phillips Gallery, and an exhibit featuring artwork by Lennie Jones, Dennis Joyce, Danny Morgan and Byron M. Wood in Founders Gallery.
During the luncheon at The Sanctuary, artists Michele Oppenburg and Christine Moore from Sanibel Faux at John Grey Painting will demonstrate faux and mural painting techniques. Artists Studio Tour attendees can enter a raffle to win art pieces created during the luncheon — a mural on canvas by Moore and decorative faux bamboo on a plank by Oppenburg.
The winners will be selected following the tour at a wine and cheese reception at John Grey Painting, located at 695 Tarpon Bay Road, Suite 5 (inside the Promenade Center, across from Sanibel Post Office). The winner need not be present to win. The reception at John Grey Painting is free and open to the public.

Fact BoxDirector Series Films and Discussions continue
BIG ARTS Film Society continues the annual Director Series with films by Joseph Mankiewicz that demonstrate his diverse talent. Mankiewicz was perhaps the classic Hollywood era’s most versatile director, with films ranging from high drama, to camp, and even musical comedy.
The series is hosted by Sid Picker, who will lead an in-depth discussion before and after the screenings. All Director Series film events begin at 1 p.m., admission is $5.
On Wednesday, April 20 the series screens "All About Eve" (1950). One of the all-time Hollywood classics, "All About Eve" won Mankiewicz the second of his Best Director Oscars. This classic story of ambition and betrayal has become part of American folklore, was nominated for 14 Academy Awards and won six, including Best Picture. The large cast, headed by Bette Davis, includes Anne Baxter, Gary Merrill, George Saunders, Hugh Marlowe, Celeste Holm and even Marilyn Monroe.
Mankiewicz’s 1953 adaptation of the Shakespeare play "Julius Caesar" will be featured Wednesday, April 27. The extraordinary ensemble cast of Hollywood’s A-list actors, includes Marlon Brando, James Mason, John Gielgud, Louis Calhern, Greer Garson, Deborah Kerr and Edmond O'Brien. The film earned five Oscar nominations, and won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction.
Enhanced by surround sound, films will be shown in the comfort of Schein Performance Hall, with a high-definition projection system and large screen to provide a superb cinematic presentation. Listening devices are available for the hearing impaired.
