Make our path system safer

April 20, 2011
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

To the editor,

Kudos from the Sanibel Bicycle Club to the Sanibel Police Department for ticketing two bicyclists who, according to last week’s Police Beat (Island Reporter, April 14, 2011), were riding after dark without the legally required lighting.

Florida state law requires all cyclists to use headlights and taillights between sunset and sunrise. With cars turning into restaurant driveways, an unexpected cyclist is a deadly target for a surprised motorist.

The Sanibel Bicycle Club welcomes any action that will make our path system safer for all users.

Presient, Sanibel Bicycle Club
