Summer means a lot of fun things for kids to do on the island. BIG ARTS has big plans to help keep the kids busy during this year’s summer break.
One of them is Summer Arts Camp. Two programs are available at BIG ARTS Center – both will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 20 to July 29. Children entering kindergarten through fifth grade in the fall can participate in activities including painting, pottery, music, drama and movement.
Arts and music appreciation, weekly projects, and interactive stage productions will help encourage interest and wonder in the arts. For kindergarten through fifth grades, tuition is $130 per week. If reserving three or more weeks, cost is $115 per week.
The fine arts apprentice program for middle and high school students includes fused glass, mosaic, acting and improvisation, ceramics, puppet making, acrylic painting and photography. Middle school tuition is $75 per week.
For children 10 years and older, BIG ARTS is sponsoring a musical theater summer camp at its Herb Strauss Theater. The camp will also run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 20 to July 29.
The Strauss Musical Theater Camp will introduce campers to the art of musical theater performance and provide a glimpse into the technical aspects of mounting a successful Broadway musical. Young performers will receive instruction from trained and accomplished theater professionals on portraying diverse characters and expressing physical and vocal emotion on stage.
Rehearsals will emphasize the importance of teamwork as campers prepare for each production’s opening night.
Alice in Wonderland is the camp’s inaugural production and is based on Lewis Carroll’s classic work, complete with camper performances of the White Rabbit, Mad Hatter and Queen of Hearts. You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown and Thoroughly Modern Millie round out the camp’s remaining summer production schedule.
Bobby Logue will once again be providing his talents to this extraordinary theater camp. He has traveled the world as a performer, dance captain and choreographer for the nation’s largest international production company "Chezzam Entertainment."
He has also performed in more than 150 productions nationally and internationally and been a part of nearly all the Strauss Theater musical productions over the past seven years.
In addition to theater, Logue has been the adult tap, jazz and hip hop instructor for BIG ARTS for the past four years. Favorite credits include Jesus in Godspell, leading player in Pippin, Paul in A Chorus Line; Linus in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown and Bobby Childs in Crazy For You.
Jenny Smith, who will also be a part of the musical summer camp, has a bachelor of fine arts – theater, from Arkansas State University, Jonesboro and holds a Master of Arts in acting from University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.
Previous shows she has appeared in at Herb Strauss Theater include Play On!, Out of Order, Plaza Suite and Unnecessary Farce. Other credits include Anne Boleyn in Anne of the Thousand Days; Marquise de Merteuil in Les Liasions Dangereuses; and recently Eve in The Diaries of Adam and Eve: Searching for Eden. Smith has been a BIG ARTS summer arts camp instructor and her voice can be heard in local radio and TV commercials.
The deadline to register for each two-week session of camp will be one week in advance of its start date. The June 20 session deadline will be June 13; the July 5 session deadline is June 28; and the July 18 session deadline is July 11. Each session is $350 and there is a minimum requirement of 10 campers for each session.
Volunteer opportunities are available for any summer session.
All camps will be closed Monday, July 4, in recognition of Independence Day; there is a tuition discount for the third week of camp. Tuition assistance is available by contacting BIG ARTS for an application.
