Widening and ashpalt paving of Sanibel's Shared Use Path along Rabbit Road between Sanibel-Captiva Road and West Gulf Drive is the first of several path upgrade projects on the way over the next couple of months.

"We are widening the existing six-foot asphalt to eight feet and overlaying it with asphalt," said Sanibel Public Works director Scott Krawczyk. "It's all part of the master plan study done in 2009."

Bateman Contracting LLP started the Rabbit Road path project on July 23 at a cost of $122,000. Work is expected to be completed within 60 days. The entire path is closed to all public use during the project, forcing bicyclists to share Rabbit Road with motorists or find alternate routes.

Workers with Bateman Contrating are busy widening and repaving the city's Shared Use Path that runs west of and parallel to Rabbit Road. The $122,000 project is expected to be finished in September.

"There was some permitting that had to be done with ecological concerns," said Krawczyk. "That path takes you through some wilderness areas that shows you what the real Sanibel is."

Other path upgrade projects will be starting soon, including constructing new paths along Dixie Beach Boulevard from Albatross Road to Royal Poinciana Drive and on Bailey Road from Periwinkle Way to Bayview Drive. Those two projects awarded to C.W. Roberts Contracting Inc. will cost $279,000 out of the city's Capital Improvements Project funding.

Widening the path along Tarpon Bay Road from Island Inn Road to West Gulf Drive, awarded to Bonness Inc. at a cost of $170,950, began on Monday.

"We hope to have all of the Shared Use Path projects completed by the end of September, before season," said Krawczyk.
