June Hirschhaut DeRonck, 66, of Sanibel, Fl., and Hartford, Conn., died on May 10, 2013, at Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford after a courageous two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
June was born in Hartford to Sanford H. and Jean (Herrmann) Hirschhaut. She was a 1965 graduate of Windsor High School.
After raising her children, she began a new career as a nurse, and earned her BSN from St. Joseph College in 1999. Her nursing career was marked by her kindness and compassion for her patients, their families, and her coworkers. She retired from active nursing in 2010, and relocated to her beloved Sanibel Island with her husband of 44 years, Henry, and her faithful companion Yorkshire terrier, Oliver.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children: Jay DeRonck and his wife Nicole, of Hartford, and Heather DeRonck and her husband Bryan VanArsdale of Philadelphia. She also leaves her father, Sanford Hirschhaut of Peabody, Mass., and three siblings: Nancy Kapsten of Gloucester, Mass., Marjorie DiGalbo of Marlborough, Conn., and William Hirschaut of Peabody Mass., and their families; and, of course, her beloved Oliver. June lived her life with grace, dignity, and courage and then there was that wonderful smile.
June and her family wish to thank all the individuals who cared for her during her struggle with cancer, both in Connecticut and Florida, and all the friends and acquaintances who offered help and support. It was greatly appreciated.
Calling hours are at June's Hartford home on Thursday and Friday, May 16 and 17, from 6 to 9 p.m. Relatives and friends may also gather at June's Hartford home on Saturday, May 18 from 5 to 9 p.m., to celebrate her life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Saint Francis Hospital Palliative Care Program (www.stfranciscare.org/PalliativeCare), or to the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (www.sccf.org).
