FISH volunteers needed over summer

July 10, 2013
By MCKENZIE CASSIDY (mcassidy@breezenewspapers.com) , Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

FISH of Sanibel is looking for new volunteers over the summer months.

The organization manages a number of programs delivering meals, stocking the food pantry, and providing transportation to medical appointments, to name a few that help those in need living on Sanibel or Captiva.

Maggi Feiner, executive director of FISH, said volunteers are needed now more than ever because so many residents leave the island during the summer. The number of volunteers typically drops from 180 to 60 in the summer, and that smaller group has to handle the same workload.

"Volunteer opportunities are open in all areas," said Feiner. "We need volunteers for meal deliveries, picking up food, stocking the pantry, and running the backpack program for children. We deliver backpacks over the summer months because they aren't getting the free and reduced lunches they normally get at school."

She added that the number of medical appointment drivers decreases to five over the summer, meaning one driver could be making up to four trips to the doctor each week.

"It's a lot to ask one person to do," said Feiner.
