Conditional use and development permits were approved for the owners of a residential property on Bird Lane to construct a shoreline revetment structure to protect the bayfront property from further erosion.
Sanibel Planning Commissioners approved the measures during a public hearing at Tuesday's regularly scheduled meeting at City Hall. The owners of the property at 1191 Bird Lane, Cypress Holdings. will remove the existing wood retaining wall that is failing and replied it with a shoreline rip rap revetment structure to protect the property from further erosion by San Carlos Bay waters.
The permits allow the owners to install approximately 163 linear feet of rip rap material above the mean high water line in accordance with 27 conditions.
Erosion of the shoreline for the residential property at 1191 Bird Lane is so severe that the wood retaining barrier is failing. The owner was awarded permits for a revetment structure designed to protect the San Carlos Bayfront property from further damage.
Those conditions include not moving the current mean high water line waterward with the revetment installation using of polyfilter X fabric or equivalent a minimum of five feet landward and five feet waterward with a proper slope and elevation. Red mangroves are to be planted within the structure area along with additional vegetation suitable for erosion control.
Plantings will be sufficient to conceal and stabilize the rip rap creating a natural appearing shoreline and include a minimum of three native species that are salt tolerant and suitable for the Bay Beach zone. Exotic species of plants that compete or otherwise displace native plants shall be removed and kept permanently free of exotics.
Approval of the permits passed by a 6-0 vote with chair Mike Valiquette absent from the meeting. With the lack of opposition to the permitting, the approval will become effective with commission signature in lieu of a second hearing.
Commissioners also gave final permit approval to the expansion of the Sanibel Deli in the Palm Ridge Plaza and the Beachview Country Club plat change for the parcel containing the tennis courts and clubhouse. Both permits were discussed at length at previous commission hearings.
