The Sundial Beach Resort & Spa hosted a Labor Day Celebration to commemorate its first summer open to the public in five years.

Guests to the weekend party enjoyed an all-you-can-eat buffet and live entertainment from Danny Morgan's Apple Butter Band. Director of Food and Beverage Paul Cuppy held a drawing at 1 p.m. to select the winner of a complimentary weekend for two at the resort and winners of other gift certificates.

The celebration and drawings were all part of the resort's Sanibel SummerFest, a promotion to let the general public know they're open for business.

"As we celebrate the rebirth of Sundial Beach Resort, Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to gather and share memories of a great summer as we plan for the upcoming fall and winter season," said new General Manager Bob Kramm.

The two winners of the complimentary weekend, Sander Heijbroek of Illinois and Christine Kitchen of Sanibel Island, weren't present for the drawing but were notified by the resort.

Other gift certificate winners included: Teri McNamara of Haworth, NJ; Lloyd Sowers, Tampa Bay; Lisa Reim, Long Island; and Bhuvan Satyaketu from Margate, Fla.

Cuppy said his staff has seen an increase in the number of tourists and locals visiting the resort since they opened to the general public.

"You can definitely see the influx on the weekends," he said.

The Labor Day event is only the first of many holiday celebrations to come, he said. Events for Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are scheduled, each as memorable as the next. For instance, on Columbus Day, the resort has organized Columbus' landing on Sanibel Island, and for Christmas there will be elves and a real life Santa Clause.

"There will be a lot more excitement and memories for the little kids," said Cuppy. "It's an exciting and new time."
