Director of Lee Homeless Coalition to address island Democrats

Janet Bartos, executive director of the Lee County Homeless Coalition, will address the Democratic Club of the Islands on Thursday, March 27 at 7 p.m. at the Sanibel Public Library. The meeting is free and open to the public.

The Lee County Homeless Coalition exists to advocate, educate and monitor awareness of issues and obstacles facing the homeless in Lee County.

As a non-profit agency, the coalition collaborates with local businesses and faith-based groups to provide and implement services and solutions. On any given night in Lee County, 3,000 people have no place to call home. On Aug. 12, 2013, the Lee County School District also recorded 1,450 children as homeless.

Bartos will discuss the variety of programs available under the umbrella of the Lee County Homeless Coalition.

State Senator Jack Latvala's wants to use some of this year's budget surplus to help expand programs for the homeless in Florida.

"Florida is home to the third largest number of homeless in the nation. That's reason enough for my bill to pass," he said.

Statewide there were 45,364 people living on the street or in emergency shelters in January. Everyone concerned with this ethical and public health issue is urged to attend.

The Democratic Club of the Islands is an authorized organization of the Lee County Executive Committee, which exists to stimulate interest in political and governmental affairs, to educate the electorate about issues, and to further the ideals of the Democratic Party.
