The mysterious, world-renowned jeweler Gurhan Orhan will visit Sanibel for an exclusive designer celebration weekend at Lily & Co. Jewelry Gallery from March 28-30.
Lily co-owner Dan Schuyler was like a kid in a candy store when he found out one of his greatest inspirations agreed to visit his very own store.
"He only does about three personal appearances a year in the United States," he said.
According to Schuyler, Gurhan is a man of many talents, but none compare with his ability to manipulate and design pure metals to create wearable jewelry.
"Most gold jewelry is 14-karat gold. He uses only pure, 24-karat gold, pure bouillon out of the ground. Most pure gold is very soft and malleable. He hammer-hards it to make it wearable," he said. "All the metals he uses in his jewelry are pure, pure silver, gold, etc."
Schuyler said the difference between 14k and 24k is easy to decipher.
"It's got a smooth texture to it, you can feel the difference. There's nothing like the touch of pure gold."
Gurhan will appear at a special, invite-only reception on Friday, March 28 from 5 to 9 p.m. and join Lily & Co.'s open house weekend on Saturday and Sunday, March 29-30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and noon to 5 p.m., respectively. He will be on hand to sign his work and interact with guests.
His story is of a renaissance man who did not find his true calling until 40 years-old, when he came across a sheet of 24-karat gold by chance. The Istanbul native has since transformed his creations along with his wife and business partner, Fiona, into a global jewelry empire, world-renowned for its distinct, rustic look and use of pure metals and precious stones.
