To the editor:
The bike path is jammed. Lots of families, in long, unruly lines. And so many with not a single helmet.
Yes, tourists, most likely, or families down to see the Grand Parents, and on holiday and in mindless happiness mood. A mood where more accidents are prone to come with the delight. Without helmets, serious damage can take place. I particularly worry about younger kids. Tourists don't know that the law requires helmets under 16.
The bike rental companies don't charge extra for helmets! Not even a deposit. It comes with the price of the rental. I deeply respect them for that. But, tourists tend to reject the offer at great peril to themselves. The odds are higher that the inexperienced on the bike path are more likely to get involved in an accident.
I implore all the parents and grandparents to be a good model and always wear a helmet. And not say, "We only ride on the bike path." That's where the accidents happen, reputedly, seven or eight a week. More in the high traffic season.
It's not time for being macho or worrying about helmet hair. Please wear a helmet! For your safety and the safety of other bikers, as well.
