Causeway motorists urged to use caution Wednesday

May 30, 2014
Special to the Reporter (sancapnews@breezenewspapers.com) , Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

Motorists traveling the Sanibel Causeway on Wed. June 4 will observe crews inspecting the structure between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. No lane closures are scheduled, but short traffic disruptions may occur during the staging and tear down of cones and signs.

Message boards will be placed to alert drivers, who are urged to use caution. The inspection work will be done from the shoulders of the three bridges; it is expected to be a one-day job.

There has been some ongoing cracking in the beams under the decks of the bridges that Lee County Department of Transportation continues to monitor. The Causeway remains safe. Repairs are proposed to seal the cracks in the concrete and prevent them from continuing, with the goal of ensuring the Causeway bridges reach their targeted 75-year life span.

Motorists can direct questions via email to LeeTrafficTOC@leegov.com. Or contact Lee County Communications Director Betsy Clayton at 533-2221.
