Routine maintenance work on the Sanibel Causeway is scheduled for today and Thursday June 18-19.
The Lee County Department of Transportation notified the City of Sanibel earlier this month that workers will be blowing out the expansion joints on the bridge, joints designed to give the bridge flexibility and protect against extreme conditions.
Crews will be working on the causeway from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and are expected to finish on June 19 unless weather conditions halt progress. Although some traffic delays are expected, crews aren't closing lanes.
Earlier this month, on June 4, DOT inspectors checked beams under the decks of the bridges to monitor a series of cracks that were spotted several years ago.
According to Betsy Clayton, Lee County communications director, the project scheduled for June 18 is unrelated to the cracks and the county doesn't have a proposed date to begin sealing the cracks in the concrete.
She said there is no reason for the public to be concerned about the appearance of the cracks and the causeway remains safe. The bridges are expected to reach their targeted 75-year life span.
