Thanks for supporting this year’s Galloway Captiva Tri

To the editor:

A fellow race director once told me that the reason he began producing triathlons is because almost everyone is a winner. That was never more true than the weekend of Sept. 10-11 with the Galloway Captiva Triathlon. Between the two races we had nearly 1,000 athletes from all over Florida and from 25 states and two other countries. Each one had a different goal. Some were brave just to start; some just wanted to finish; others to improve their personal best; still others to place in their age group; and others still to compete in the elite amateur and finally to place in the top three.

Amid beautiful weather, the kids' race on Saturday and the sprint on Sunday went off gloriously. The athletes certainly won and so did spectators, but the big winner were Lee County's hungry kids served by Community Cooperative's Healthy School Pantry and Backpack program. Among other things, this program sends backpacks home with kids on weekends so they have food to eat when school isn't in session to provide them with breakfast and lunch. The $35,000 donation from this year's Galloway Captiva Tri will fund nearly six months of that program.

All this was made possible by the registration fees, our fantastic volunteers and our terrific sponsors:

First, the Galloway Family of Dealerships, our title sponsor again this year.

Lee County Sports Development, our sprint event sponsor

Attorney Jason Gunter, the children's event sponsor

South Seas Island Resort, the official resort

Geared Up Multisport Specialists, the official coach

Lee Memorial Health System, swim caps sponsor

Jason's Deli, food sponsor

We were kept safe by the Lee County Sheriff's Department (aviation, bomb squad, and K-9 units at the race in addition to the usual complement of traffic and VOICE units), the Captiva Fire District, Lee County EMS, the City of Sanibel and the lifeguards from Lee County Parks and Rec.

In particular, we want to thank the residents of Captiva who are so generous about our closing their road for two hours during the race; the Captiva and Sanibel athletes who participated this year; the Sanibel volunteers and the Captiva sponsors. It takes a community to run (yes, pun intended) a great triathlon, and we saw that community spirit again this year.
