Re-elect Denham, Harrity, Ruane

To the editor:

There are three City Council seats up for election on March 7. We will have to decide which of the four candidates are best suited for these three seats.

When I reflect on the issues covered by the regional daily newspaper with regard to politics in the various cities that are within Lee County, there are embarrassing stories about City Council members or a mayor feuding with other members of council. Consequently, little progress is made on the important issues that come before them.

The Sanibel City Council operates very well under strict guidelines. Over the many years, the council has been our elected body. Sanibel has made great strides in all the critical areas: taxes (millage rate) are constantly being reduced, water quality issues are being attacked, reserve funds are now at $14 million, pension benefits are now at workable numbers and most importantly, the overall financial condition of the city is excellent. The City Council does not agree on all issues and there are spirited discussions, but they are civil and respectful and council works out their differences to reach agreement.

Three of the men who are seeking re-election are Mick Denham, Marty Harrity and Kevin Ruane. They are a veteran team that is responsible for the outstanding condition of our city government. They have years of experience and equally important have developed credibility with leaders in Lee County, Tallahassee and Washington, D.C.

I am voting for Denham, Harrity and Ruane based on their experience, expertise and their accomplishments which are reflected in the outstanding overall operation of our city.

I think Sanibel is a model for other cities in Florida to study for its effectiveness and efficiencies.

Be sure to vote on March 7 for our Sanibel City Council.
