The Captiva Memorial Library is set to kick off its summer reading program for adults, with participants having the opportunity to win free books, a canvas tote and even a tablet.

In collaboration with the Lee County Library System, the island branch will host "Libraries Rock!" from May 29 to Aug. 11 to celebrate the joy of reading. Book Bingo for Adults will be offered to ages 18 and older, with one bingo card per person. Participants can pick up cards beginning on May 29.

Branch Manager Colleen Barany explained that there are five boxes across and five boxes down on each card, with the center box is a free one. Each box outlines a task that has to be completed before it can be checked off, like read a new book or read a book and watch the movie based off of the book.

Participants in the Book Bingo for Adults have an opportunity to win a canvas beach tote from the Captiva Memorial Library for completing all the tasks on their bingo card.

"Try a new music genre," she said, citing some of the other tasks listed. "Or use Freegal Music. It's a free and legal way to download music, and you can do that through the library's website."

"It introduces people to one of the services that the library provides," Barany added.

Like the game, the goal is to get bingo across, down or diagonally.

Winners will receive a free book, limited to three per person.

"Those are hardcover books that people have donated for us," she said.

Barany noted that participants complete the tasks on the honor system, but there is space for each requiring the person to fill out related information. For example, for the task of explore something new on the library's website, the participant must write down what the new thing is they learned about.

The deadline to turn in bingo cards is Aug. 11.

Those who complete all of the tasks will be entered into a drawing.

"The more time you have, the more things you can complete," she said of getting a card early.

On Aug. 17, the branch will draw one winner, who will receive the tote.

"It's one of our beach bags that says Captiva Memorial Library on it," Barany said.

The bag will also contain books and miscellaneous library swag.

Barany explained that the branch winner will then be entered into a systemwide drawing for a chance to win an Amazon Fire HD tablet with Alexa, which comes with 32 GB and a resolution of 1080p.

The library system will draw the grand prize winner on Aug. 31.

She noted that the prizes will not be mailed.

"We will not be sending prizes to people," Barany said. "They have to come and get them."

While the Lee County Library System has offered a summer reading program for children for many years now, a summer program for adults has only been organized for the last couple of years.

Officials reported that an estimated 10,000 youth systemwide participate each summer.

"They're usually pretty popular," she said of the programming in general.

Barany encouraged the community to check out online what the Captiva branch is offering over the summer for adults and children, as well as what programs the system's other libraries have set.

"They can pick one branch if they're going to be downtown and they can see what's going on the day they're going to be there," she said.

Barany also invited the public to stop by and pick up a bingo card.

"Come to the library and take a look around," she said. "Learn about the library."

The library is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information on a program, call 239-533-4890.

The Captiva Memorial Library is at 11560 Chapin Lane.
