The Captiva Memorial Library has a free fun program planned on July 25 for interested families.

Wrapping up "Libraries Rock!" - this year's summer reading program that featured activities for children of all ages in June and July - will be "Guitar Art, Rocks! with DiVitto Kelly" at 6:30 p.m. The visiting librarian and artist will lead attendees through a workshop decorating electric guitars.

Library associate Naomi Pastor explained that it is an arts and craft project for ages 6 and up.

The shark and stingray on the wall in the Children's Room at the Captiva Memorial Library were created by visiting librarian and artist DiVitto Kelly, who will lead a children's program on July 25.

"He is going to bring us some electric guitar sculpture pieces," she said.

They will be made from high-quality Styrofoam that Kelly pre-cut.

"They're going to be nice big pieces, so they can make a replica of a guitar," Pastor said.

Participants will then use colored tissue paper and a glue and water mixture to decorate them.

"It's kind of like decoupage," Senior Librarian and Branch Manager Colleen Barany said.

All of the materials and supplies are provided free-of-charge.

Some of Kelly's previous programs featured making stingrays, sharks and more.

"He's been real popular in the past," Pastor said.

She added that the cut-outs fit with this summer's Libraries Rock! theme.

"We thought we'd do a rock 'n' roll electric guitar," Pastor said.

Sponsored by the Captiva library's board, the program is limited to 20 attendees.

"It's an art studio," she said.

Kelly's own work can be found online at www.divittokelly.com.

"You can actually see his artwork," Pastor said.

The summer reading program is something that the library offers every year.

"Everything that we do at the library is aligned with our mission of strengthening our community by information and enriching individuals," Barany said.
