Thank you city council

To the editor:

I recently read an article about the Sanibel City Council calling for air quality testing as the red tide persists and wanted to say thank you to them. I see the city is putting up a good fight on the water issue but there are some really big players fighting. I really think human health is the way to attack them.

I used to walk two to five miles a day on the beach, but I have not been on the beach since July 27 - when the first fish kills appeared by me. My thinking is if it can kill wildlife, what is it doing to me? Maybe I won't feel the effects now, but who is to say what these toxins will do to me in 10 years.

It seems like the powers that be do not want to worry about the air; they do a half-ass job of testing the water. I think they test the water twice a week, but no air. They need to be called out and start testing everything.

I hope the city gets together with the other cities and attacks the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and South Florida Water Management District on this subject because there is little support from anyone else. I have expressed my opinion to the Lee County commissioners, and the good old boys only care about money. They even refused to support the five Lee County cities fighting the schedule of the releases.

I want to live here another 30 years, but I need to be healthy to do it.

Sanibel, thank you for everything you have done to try to fix this problem.
