Use of drones on Sanibel

January 16, 2019
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

To the editor:

My wife and I were on the Gulf side beach off Seagrape Lane last Sunday, Dec. 31, and we were astonished to see someone operating a sophisticated drone from the beach. This was no child's toy, it was noisy, buzzing the beach and generally swooping around, sometimes at high altitude and then diving close to other beach users, up and down the beach. There is no place for this sort of thing on Sanibel where it also poses a real threat to wildlife.

If possible, the flying of drones by unauthorized members of the public should be banned on Sanibel, or at least on beaches and in the vicinity of all designated conservation areas. I am sure that the city council will be well aware of this potential menace, which is likely to increase in the future, and hope that it will be able to take appropriate action against their use on the island.
