Rabbits taking over the island

February 6, 2019
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

To the editor:

Parts of the island are currently being invaded by swarms of rabbits. They are destroying much of the vegetation. The rabbit population is out of control, perhaps because of the lack of predatory species, that usually keep the balance of the species under control.

Could control measures be implemented?

Perhaps the strategy seems live traps that would enable distribution of the species to more balanced environments. Presently, the strategy seems to pretend it is not happening.

Keeping species in balance is the responsibility of the governing body.
