Library presents activities for July

The Captiva Memorial Library, at 11560 Chapin Lane, is offering the following free programs for adults and youth during the month of July:

ADULT PROGRAMS

- Today, June 25, to Aug. 10: Intergalactic Multi-Task Challenge

Participate and earn chances to win a branch prize. Complete tasks on the Multi-Task Challenge list to earn tickets. The more tasks completed, the more chances to win. To participate, stop in to pick up a "multi-pass," get your first stamp/ticket and be entered to win.

- Coloring for Grown-ups

(daily during operating hours)

Researchers and art therapists alike have touted the calming effects of coloring, and adults have found this childhood activity a refreshing way to release their creativity, relieve stress and meet other participants. Coloring pages designed especially for adults, as well as colored pencils, provided.

- Checkers

(daily during operating hours)

Play classic checkers, "the game of games," or try other versions such as Fox and Geese, Give Away, Shifting Pyramids, Corner Checkers or Goban. Instructions included. Alternatively, reverse the field and play Tic Tac Toe or Super Tic Tac Toe.

TEEN PROGRAMS

- July 2-3, July 5 and July 6: Phases of the Moon

Learn the phases of the moon with this handy DIY activity. Supplies provided while they last.

- July 9-13: And Then?

(daily during operating hours)

A librarian began writing a story and then asked teens to complete it. Help us create our story, one sentence at a time. Supplies provided while they last.

- July 16-20: Glow Stick Light Saber

(daily during operating hours)

Make your own pocket-sized light saber to defend the Force or join the dark side. Supplies provided while they last.

- July 23-27: Universal Community Mural

(daily during operating hours)

Contribute to our library mural with a roll of the dice that include six universal symbols used in every culture. Supplies provided while they last.

- July 25: Art with Zan: Task Party from 2 to 3 p.m.

This participatory improvisational performance art activity is different every time it happens. Participants choose tasks written on small slips of paper from a box and perform whatever the task instructs them to do. Everyone does their unique tasks simultaneously, making it up as they go along, using whatever random materials are made available.

July 30 to Aug. 3: Early Bird or Night Owl?

Are you a morning person or do you prefer the nights? Share why you enjoy the rising sun or moon through this simple activity.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

- Today, June 25, to June 29: Solar system mobile

(daily during operating hours)

Color, arrange and assemble a simple mobile based on our solar system. Supplies provided while they last.

- June 27: Star Stories: Greek Myths from 2 to 3 p.m.

The night sky is full of star constellations. The ancient Greeks named the star constellations after their awesome myths and folktales. Katie Adams performs the myths with colorful shadow puppets, storytelling and audience participation.

- July 2-3, July 5 and July 6: Simple Rocket Launcher

3, 2, 1, BLAST OFF! You will love making these rockets fly over and over! This kid-powered paper craft is easy to personalize, put together and launch! Supplies provided while they last.

- July 9-13: Night Silhouette and Constellation

(daily during operating hours)

Imagine your world at night, lit up by the stars. Bring it to life by creating your own night silhouette and constellation. Supplies provided while they last.

- July 16-20: Alien in Underpants

(daily during operating hours)

Based on the book series by Claire Freedman, design and create your very own alien in underpants paper craft. All supplies provided while they last.

- July 23-27: Universal Community Mural

(daily during operating hours)

Contribute to our library mural with a roll of the dice that include six universal symbols used in every culture. Supplies provided while they last.

- July 30 to Aug. 3: Sun and Moon Agamograph

(daily during operating hours)

A fun coloring and folding project that changes depending on the viewing angle. All supplies provided while they last.

- July 2-6: Transportation Activity

Infant to 24 months old, "Things that go!"; ages 2-3, "Buses and trains"; and ages 4-5, "Big trucks"

- July 9-13: Gardens Activity

(daily during operating hours)

Infant to 24 months old, "Let's Plant a Garden"; ages 2-3, "What's Growing in My Garden?"; and ages 4-5, "Frogs Jump Everywhere"

- July 16-20: Music and Movement Activity

(daily during operating hours)

Infant to 24 months old, "Let's Make Music and Dance"; ages 2-3, "Sing a Song of Joy"; and ages 4-5, "Sing, Sing a Song!"

- July 23-27: Night Skies and Lullabies Activity

(daily during operating hours)

Infant to 24 months old, "Time for Bed"; ages 2-3, "Bedtime Stories"; and ages 4-5, "Night Skies and Outer Space"

- July 30 to Aug. 3: Animal Activity

(daily during operating hours)

Infant to 24 months old, "Some Fly, Some Swim"; ages 2-3, "Zoo Day"; and ages 4-5, "Jungle Animals"

The Captiva Memorial Library is open Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about a program or to register, call the library at 239-533-4890.
