On-the-water training now an option with boating course

November 14, 2019

After years of development, America's Boating Club has redesigned its America's Boating Course to include a two-hour training session on the water, according to the organization's island chapter.

Since its inception, the course has been exclusively a classroom-textbook program.

Initially, America's Boating Club of Sanibel-Captiva added a dusk-to-evening cruise to its course in partnership with Adventures in Paradise Cruises. The students, along with club members, got to witness firsthand the change that occurs when boating by dark. The cruise continues to be a vital part of the course, but instructors and members continued to discuss the need to hone the boating skills of boaters.

Eventually, the club came up with the idea of guiding a boater at his or her side, while on his or her own boat. The two-hour Hands-On-Training or H.O.T. has been added to the course as an option.

In planning for the session on the water, the boater and instructor will determine the skills to be polished. For example, though the boat owner may well be an experienced boater, he or she may have recently taken possession of a new boat and just want to fine tune maneuvering in close waters.

Or, a boater may have a "wish list" ranging from docking starboard to dock; port to dock; stern to dock; bow to dock. Another boater may want to focus on pivot points and maneuvering in close waters.

The session is tailor-made by the instructor with the student.

America's Boating Club of Sanibel-Captiva will offer the first course of the season on Dec. 4.
