On Jan. 7, the Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club's Grants Committee awarded a $4,000 grant to Florida Gulf Coast University's Water School. The school's mission is to understand and solve water problems and to plan for the future of Southwest Florida. It will use the grant toward research on the potential link between nutrients coming from such sources as the Caloosahatchee River and groundwater wells, and red tide blooms. The club awards grants from the proceeds of its annual Shell Show. They are given in the fields of conchology and malacology, as well as conservation and water quality, primarily in Southwest Florida.
